About
Born in 1951, Kamini Mehta grew in a traditional and conservative joint family in Jodhpur (India), where she did her studies from a Hindi medium school. While growing up she was very interested in painting and creative activities, which gave her the confidence to choose arts as a graduation course, from Nirmala Niketan college in Mumbai. Over the course of the next 4 years, she undertook multiple courses ranging from canvas painting, fabric painting, flower making, sculpture, embossing, foil painting, nib painting and wood work painting with the sole aim of excelling and understanding the true essence of each of the art forms. Kamini’s first exhibition was held in 1972 and was graced by the royal families of Jaipur and Jodhpur. It was a complete sell out to the tune of her winning orders for the next 2 years and all of this was made possible only due to her faith, resilience and strong conviction in own abilities. This fantastic debut and initial success gave her the conviction that this is what she wants to do her whole life and that is when her dreams began taking shape.
In 1983 she moved to Bengaluru to share her learning via home based teaching classes. Kamini consciously chose to operate from home so that she could not only pursue her passion but take good care of her home and her family as well. Parallely, she also kept doing small exhibitions and showcased her art in local and regional flea markets to turn her passion into a worthy profession. Kamini has clients across the world and some of them go back as long as when she started in the 70s, with their 3rd generation placing orders with her for all sorts of clothing, paintings and home accessories. Her clients, students and close friends describe Kamini as a great mentor, a good listener, an artist par excellence with amicable and affable nature and a wonderful human being.
Her partner in Aakar is none other than her daughter, her protégé Meenakshi Mehta who just like her mother, learned to dabble in various creative and art forms when she was just 8 years old and started helping her, supporting her professionally when she turned 13! Meenakshi has been in the content space for close to 15 years as a creative director with a host of big brands as her clients. She takes care of the marketing, the orders and support in painting part at Aakar, while Kamini the artist visualizes the art work and the fabrics and the complete execution.
At 71, Kamini continues to paint at least 7 hours a day. Her mantra: Keep moving forward. Keep Innovating. Celebrate Life.
